The Brand New Heavies
September 17th, Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture, 19:30 h
Brand New Heavies, the band that pioneered world acid jazz, will have their first concert in Bulgaria on the occasion of Jazz FM’s seventh birthday. The celebration starts on the 17th of September at 19,30 at Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture. Just before them the stage will be taken by the Bulgarian band Tе with Preslava Peicheva.
The Brand New Heavies founding members Jan Kincaid, Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy originally drew their inspiration from the funk grooves of the 70s. The band then recorded some original music and burst on the London club stage with their modern sound. The band has had many singles on the top positions of the British and U.S. singles, dance, R’N’B and hip hop music charts, and many of their albums went platinum. Among their biggest hits are: “Sometimes, You’ve Got A Friend”, “Dream On Dreamer”, “Apparently Nothing”, “Shelter”, “Never Stop”…
Ray Charles himself was a great fan of their music and invited them to take part in the concert, celebrating his 50th anniversary in show business. It was then that they shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones. The Brand New Heavies established a cult following to the music that was to be performed by Jamiroquai and Erykah Badu some years later.
The Brand New Heavies experimented with hip hoppers and rappers on their first album, but later their main lead singer became N’dea Davenport – the phenomenal Grammy-nominated vocalist, who we will welcome in Sofia. The Brand New Heavies have also recorded with Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson, well familiar to the Bulgarian fans from a previous Sofia Jazz Peak concert.
